Bialetti Volta

Electric Moka Pot

Project Goal

Visualize a modern version of Bialetti’s iconic Moka Pot coffee maker

Bialetti’s Moka Pot

While studying abroad in Florence, Italy I enjoyed many fine cups of coffee. My staple drink was a strong coffee brewed in a Moka Pot, made by Italian company Bialetti since 1933.

Despite its age, the Moka Pot is still very popular, and is in use in 90% of Italian homes.

The Stovetop Problem

Despite its longevity and popularity, most Moka Pots on the market suffer from a flaw that makes them finicky and dangerous to use.

The stovetop usage makes the entire Moka Pot hot, leading to burns. Leaving the Moka over the flame too long burns the coffee, making it bitter.

Bialetti Form Language

Studying Bialetti’s existing products, I honed in on their sleek forms, fine finishes, and playful branding

Aesthetic inspiration

In order to further develop Bialetti’s form language, I honed in on some cues popular in consumer electronic products.

Ideation

I began ideating with thumbnail sketches before moving onto more refined exploration.

Rapid CAD Ideation

Using Rhino, I continued to rapidly develop the form of the coffee maker. I first used simples shape to validate proportions, and then began experimenting with handle forms and surface details.
